The 2017 Mercedes E300 is one of those luxury cars ideal for the driver concerned primarily with high-efficiency, comfortable and relaxing long-haul cruising.
The turbocharged four-cylinder is adequately powerful, easy on fuel, and helps generate a generous highway cruising range. Look for 241 horsepower, backed by 273 lb.-ft of torque, for effortless low-RPM acceleration.
The ride is soft and plush on virtually all surfaces. A full array of fully-automatic and self-activating features means the E300 requires little of you, other than to sit back and enjoy the ride. Hours and hours of highway driving pass with ease in this machine.
Add in the cabin, which wouldn’t look out of place in a $100,000-plus Mercedes S-Class, the potent and vivid Burmester stereo system, and the full suite of hazard-detecting safety features, and you’ve got a lavish and comfy cruiser that’s big on high-tech.
The 2017 Mercedes E300 can also maintain a safe following distance in traffic, thanks to one of the best radar cruise systems I’ve ever used. It can self-steer to stay centered in its lane, steer for you, or even change lanes for you: just click the signal, and the E300 checks its blind spots with radar, and moves over, if the way is clear. It’s a real conversation starter, even if I’m more a fan of the human being doing the driving. If you’re a fan of sci-fi level hazard-detection tech and driving aids, you’ll like what’s happening, here.
End of the day, this big comfy cruiser isn’t trying to light your pants on fire with its performance or handling, but if you’re after one of the most tranquil and luxurious cruisers on this side of a six-figure pricetag, the 2017 Mercedes E300 is worth a test-drive.
