Thanks, pulling the heads may be worth while on something as high end as the RS4, but on a more entry level car IE. Mazda Speed 3, Cobalt SS, GTI it wouldn't be worth the labor costs.

I can see it being a problem in the Audi/vw engines, the 2.0T Fsi is known to burn up to a liter of oil between oil changes, most of this is through the PCV valve while under boost. If changing the tune it is pretty standard to install a catch can to keep that stuff out of the intake.

Its also cited as a potential benefit to adding water/meth injection on a DI motor, the steam/water can help wash the valves.

Keep me in the loop, i'm interested to hear the input from people who know much more than i do.

thats an excellent question and one i'm not sure on. i have read on potential issues with this in fact, most notably in the used Audi RS4. If I recall, owners of these say that they removed the heads and had the valves professionally cleaned. Not sure if this is something that automakers have designed or compensated for at this point. And I wonder if a simple spray-in intake cleaner, the kind you'd spray into the intake system, would do it. Maybe a good idea for a story? Lets keep in touch about this, i'll see if I can get the scoop on it from someone in the industry.

Any suggestions for valve and injector cleaning in direct injected engines?

It seems like shortsighted thinking to have a PCV system that vents crankcase fumes into the intake without the ability to "wash" the backside of the valves with injected fuel. This can cause gunk on the valves with no liquid to flow over them.

I'll take care of it in my application by running the PCV valve to a catch can instead of the intake and emptying it from time to time. But in other applications where this isn't practical. Should high mileage direct injection engines be avoided on the used market because of potential gunk buildup?

you really can't beat it for the price. this was the first Jag I reviewed, and I came away very impressed. Relatively, its not even that expensive for what you're getting
